API integration, including the systems that were never meant to connect

Most integrations are easy right up until they aren't: a payment provider with odd webhooks, a marketplace with strict rate limits, or a piece of hardware from 2003 that has never seen the internet. Those are the ones I enjoy.

The billboard job is still my favourite example. The client had an LED billboard whose controller only talked to one old desktop program, and they wanted to upload images from a website. Getting there was hard, and most of the work was understanding how that old controller expected to be talked to.

Payments are the other big one. Checkout is easy. Refunds, failed renewals, webhooks that arrive twice and records that slowly drift away from the provider's are where things go wrong, and I have worked with all the major payment providers.

And when a service has no API at all, I build a connector to it anyway. I do scraping too, with various methods and techniques to avoid blockers.

Where I have done this before

Since 2017 I have connected things that were never meant to talk to each other: the billboard, two marketplaces through one Shopify app, and quite a few services that only ever had a website.

Usually Node.js or Laravel with queues doing the heavy lifting, Stripe and PayPal on the payment side, OAuth and webhooks everywhere.

"ABSOLUTELY AMAZING - a rare and shining talent in coding. Aakash solved numerous challenges, created amazing functions and made valuable updates. He is incredibly skilled, patient and fantastic to collaborate with. If Aakash can’t solve it, no one can. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"

Questions people ask

Can you integrate something that has no API?

Often, yes. It depends on the service, but I have done it for systems that only had a website or a desktop app.

Our payment integration mostly works. Is it worth fixing?

If "mostly" means you sometimes refund by hand or find orders that don't match, yes. Those problems grow with your volume.
