Replit vs Lovable: Which One Fits Your App
By Aakash Verma · · 4 min read
Replit vs Lovable gets asked as "which AI app builder is better", and that's the wrong question. Both take a prompt and give you a working app. The useful question is what kind of app you're about to have, because the two are built around very different ideas of what an app is.
Lovable assumes a web app: a React front end, and a backend it runs for you (Lovable Cloud) with a Postgres database, auth, file storage and edge functions. Replit assumes a computer: a workspace with a shell, whatever language you want, a server that can run for hours, and several ways to publish it. Most of the differences below fall out of that.

What you can build without fighting the tool
On Lovable, a SaaS dashboard, a booking tool, a marketplace front end or an internal admin panel goes from prompt to something usable very quickly, and the auth and database are wired before you think about them. It gets awkward the moment you need something that isn't a web page plus database calls: a long-running worker, a Python library, a websocket server you control. Lovable's backend code runs as edge functions, short-lived by design. It does have scheduled jobs now ("every day at 7 AM, email me a summary"), which covers a lot of cron-style work, but each run is still that short-lived kind of code.
Replit doesn't have that wall. Its Agent can write and run a Node or Python server, and publishing has four shapes: Autoscale (scales to zero, pay per request and compute), Reserved VM (an always-on machine, from about $0.02 an hour for 0.5 vCPU and 2 GiB), Scheduled (cron-style jobs) and Static. If your idea needs a process that stays up for hours, a headless browser, or a language other than TypeScript, that's Replit territory.
The flip side: with more freedom, there's more to get wrong. A Lovable app has one shape, so there are fewer ways for the agent to make a mess. A Replit app can be any shape, and when the agent picks a strange one, you own it.
Mobile apps
This one is lopsided. Replit's docs walk through building a phone app with its Agent and testing it on your phone with Expo Go; Expo is React Native, so it's a real native app, not a website in a frame. Lovable builds web apps only. To get a Lovable app into the App Store you wrap it (usually with Capacitor) and then deal with Apple's guideline 4.2, which rejects apps that are just a website.
If the phone app is the product, I'd start on Replit or straight in React Native. If it's a web product that also wants an app later, Lovable plus a wrapper is fine.
How each one bills you
This is where people get surprised, in both directions.
Lovable has one credit balance for everything: your prompts, and since June 2026 your live app's database, storage, traffic and AI calls too. Pro starts at $25 a month for 100 credits, with daily free build credits and a temporary 20-credit monthly allowance for hosting. What Lovable doesn't publish is a per-unit price for Cloud: you see an estimate per instance size inside the project, in credits.
Replit splits it. Core is $20 a month ($18 billed yearly) and includes $20 of credits; Pro is $100 and includes $100. Agent work comes out of credits unless you stay in Free Mode, where Replit picks the model for you within a plan allowance. Hosting and the database are usage-billed at published unit prices that dropped on August 1, 2026: $0.60 per million Autoscale compute units, $0.40 per million requests, $0.05 per GiB of outbound data, and Postgres at $0.16 per compute hour plus $0.35 per GiB-month of storage.
I like that Replit prints the meter rates. It means you can estimate a bill before you have one. With Lovable you find out from the Usage page after the fact, which is fine for a small app and nerve-racking for one with real traffic.
Free tiers aren't comparable for anything serious. Replit's Starter plan publishes one app, and that link goes down after 30 days. Lovable's Free plan gives you 5 build credits a day up to 30 a month, and no custom domain.
Getting your code out
Lovable has two-way GitHub sync on every plan, including Free. The code is a normal Vite and React project; the part that doesn't come with you cleanly is Lovable Cloud, since the database, users and storage live in a project you don't own.
Replit's workspace is a real Linux environment with Git, so the code leaves the way any repo does. The database is a managed Postgres you can dump with the usual tools. Neither one locks you in on code. Lovable is the stickier of the two on data.
So which one?
If you're non-technical and building a web app with logins and a database, Lovable gets you further with fewer decisions, and that's worth a lot. If you need background jobs, a specific language, an always-on server, or a native mobile app, use Replit. And if you're a developer, either one is a fast way to a first version, as long as you plan for the day a person has to read the code.
That day comes for most apps that get users. If yours is a Lovable app at that point, my agency Lovable 2 Live takes Lovable projects to production. For anything else, from Replit apps to things no builder can make, book a free call. All consultation is free.
